To develop an efficient program that caters for the needed resources in the system, versus what we as an organization think it needs, we conduct research in the schools that we are involved in. We collaborate with teachers, educators and students to best suit our resources to their needs. From village focus groups with parents and teachers, to the school board we sit down to deliberate on what need comes first, a character that makes Kenya Kids Education Fund unique.
In recent phone interviews, with the various class representatives, in Mukubu Primary School, the need for text books for different subjects, like Social Studies, Math and Science was highlighted. Consequently, we have started a fund drive, dedicated towards collecting text books in theses subject from the communities surrounding the school.
In addition we are asking for monetary donations to purchase the remaining text books. Each text book costs, approximately 4.5 U.S dollars. Textbooks bought are usually good for as long as the syllabus is good and can last up to four years. This brings us to our next proposed project. Mukubu, does not have a library structure. Most students have to carry their note books/exercise books and text books back and forth to school. As day school, the text books become prone to damage; some kinds have to walk a few miles to get to school whether rain or sunshine. Moreover most kids have no water proof backpacks or none at all. As an organization, we hope to build a library someday for the safe keeping of the books and relieving the kids the heavy load of text books during their trek home or to school.
In other exciting news we are partnering with booksforAfrica.com, a very successful, organization that helps in global collections for books. Books For Africa, has delivered millions of text books to Africa globally and we are honored to be part of their beneficiaries.
Please watch this the video below to learn how our partnership with Books for Africa will help tackle our text book problem.
If you would like to donate towards the library project, please see our home page. You can indicate where you would like your donation to go during the payment process.
Please check back next week for our next update on our text book and library projects.
